Clever Cycles (Portland, OR)

It’s been a while since Clever Cycles has been open and we’ve been meaning to do a post about them. They were the first bicycle shop on the West Coast that started importing bakfiets and other European cargo bicycles to the US. My friends and family have only great things to say about them.

They’re probably a good place to start if you’re in the market for a cargo bicycle, bakfiets, longtail, etc.

Yeah, well, I was visiting PDX in January and had contacted them about renting a bakfiets whils I was there. When I got there, the guy on the phone sounded rather stoned, and didn’t know where the ONE bakfiets they rent out was! When I asked if there was something else I could tote a tot and some groceries around in, he said “Well, umm….we don’t really have anything else like the cargo bike….umm ….I guess….we could put a kidseat on the back of a regular bike……and maybe……some paniers…..”. Hmmmm. That’s what I was asking! I didn’t find this guy to be accommodating in any way, or knowledgeable or all that interested in possibly winning over another fan of the cargo bike…

What about the Surly Big Dummy? You wrote an article about longtail bikes and left the most succesful of all time.

Not impressed with this bike store. They didn’t seem eager to make a sale. In fact, we wandered around their store for about 20 minutes before anyone noticed us (only ones there at the time.) When we did get helped we felt like we were unworthy of the bikes they sell. Boo.

That is to say, *they* made us feel unworthy of their bikes.

I’ve purchased 2 bikes from Clever and found them to be very accomodating and helpful. I even returned one for an exhange after a month with no questions asked. Most, if not all of them, live car free, so I respect their opinions on cycling for transportation.

Clever Cycles is a great shop. Not only did they lead the way in importing cargo bikes in Portland, but they are one of the first shops here to focus strictly on transportation bicycles – in other words they don’t really sell racey bikes or gear.

Besides Clever Cycles there are two other shops in Portland that promote and sell cargo bikes: Splendid Cycles and Joe Bike. These shops are different enough in what they offer that they compliment rather than compete directly with Clever.
