Metrofiets – American Bakfiets Makers

OK, I knew it would happen and couldn’t you have guessed, it would be in Portland. The first US custom maker of Dutch style cargo bicycles (bakfiets). From the looks of their weld quality and components, Metrofiets bicycles are on par with any custom built bicycle on the market.

We’re looking forward to giving one a test ride the next time we’re in Portland. You can check out their website at: as well as their beer bike at Hopworks Brewery (Portland’s own eco-brewpub)

First US maker of a ‘bakfiets’? What about HPM’s LongHaul. It’s been around for 2 decades!

  2. Hingle McCringleberry Says:

Metrofiets is not a custom bike, as the components are prewelded in sections and then botled together.

Test rides of the metrofiets, bullitt and urban arrow over the last year: all function well as bikes at 10-12mph; above 10mph the metrofiets is the least rigid frame – not possible to stand and pedal easily; urban arrow is stiffer; bullitt rides like an mtb – super efficient.
