The Christiania Tricycle is one of the original “tree hugger” bicycles from the 70s. It was built as a way for residents to get around the town of Chrisitiania, which does not allow cars. The town has about 850 residents and was established as a social experiment on the site of an old military barracks. Although the town has had some recent troubles with the Danish gov’t, the trikes themselves have gained in popularity throughout the years.
We are real fans of these great tricycles. They are sturdy front load cargo trikes that can be used for all sorts of tasks such as carrying kids, the handicapped, transporting goods, etc. The unique charm of the tricycle is it’s simple wooden box design which is inexpensive, easy to maintain, and highly customizable.

Got a total case of need it need it. I need to visit Christiana some time as well. That is if they ever get brave enough to let me back out of the middle of the US where I can do almost no harm.

Hi folks,
i think the christiania bikes has today nothing to do with “free city of Christiania” Some smarter guys has moved with the production far away to Bornholm (Island in Denmark).
It is “normal” factory with guys earning money, nothing to do with liberty, smoking joints and sex. Sorry!

Hi Carlos,
Thanks for the correction! Hopefully those guys will start selling them in the US. So more people will get of the sofa, out of their cars, and onto bicycles.
Thanks for stopping by our blog.
Regards,
John

I just wanted to let folks know that there is an American maker of tadpole trikes. Haley Trikes in Philly, PA offers standard single speed cargos at pretty affordable prices. I’m really surprised that there aren’t more trike makers in the U.S. There isn’t even one here in Portland, OR where you can’t toss a pair of Nittos ten feet without hitting a fixie-rider. Stephen Horcha (owner) made one for our family that became his Model 2. He’ll do inexpensive custom mods too. Ours is the blue model on Haley’s Custom page. It takes a 250lb payload, and has twin disc brakes, parking brakes, and a Shimano internal 3-spd hub. We hauled two kids and groceries in this quite often. Check it out. Plus, Stephen’s a great guy!

Christianiabikes are still owned by the original owners Annie and Lars, who both was part of starting Christiania the free town, they moved out when they needed more room and a licence to export.
All Christiania traditions are still very much kept in their factory where all are equal and treated extremely well.
Now the Christianiabikes are sold in USA and all over the world

And I sell them in Australia…
Get one, it will be the best decision you ever make
Cheers
